The Montmorency cherry is a species of cherry that grows in Europe, Canada and the USA. It belongs to the brighter red Amarelle variety and takes its name from the French valley of Montmorency near Paris, where it originated.

This variety produces large bright red fruits and is one of the most popular in the USA and Canada, where it is used to make the famous cherry pies, jams and compotes. But it's not just humans who like sour cherries; birds and other game enjoy their sweet and sour flavour too, and they give many a fruit grower a headache.
