Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by a gland in the brain from the amino acid L-tryptophan. Its role is toregulate the sleep-wake cycle. Production increases when it gets dark, signaling the body to prepare for sleep.

Melatonin is used because it contributes to a reduction in the time it takes to fall asleep, and is often taken by those who travel a lot by plane and experience jet lag**.
