Mannose is a monosaccharide or simple sugar that occurs naturally in plants - e.g. birch, as well as in some fruits. It is also part of the sweet secretions of some plants, called manna, and hence its name.

The peculiarity of D-mannose is that it is absorbed eight times more slowly than glucose and that most of it is not metabolized but excreted from the body. In the first hour after ingestion, 90% is excreted by the kidneys into the bladder, and up to 99% in the next eight hours.

D-mannose binds certain substances to itself, which can be eliminated from the body by consuming D-mannose.

Mannose is not stored in the liver as an energy backup, but remains in the blood, where it passes through the kidneys to the bladder.It is therefore safe for diabetics to take, but they still need to control their blood sugar levels.
