Vitex lambsquarters or scientifically Vitex agnus-castus is a shrub that grows best in the Mediterranean. You can recognize it by its characteristic leaves and fragrant flowers, which are typically purple in colour.

It is also known as monk pepper because the flowers develop small and round brown fruits that look like pepper. The nickname "monk's" comes from the fact that it was often collected in the Middle Ages by monks and nuns, who wore it around their necks as a amulet.
