Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a wild climber that thrives in the Amazon basin, mainly in Peru and Brazil. It can be found under the names Una de Gato (Spanish),Cat's Claw (English) and Katzenkralle (German) - all of which translate to cat's claw.

The plant gets its interesting name from the curved spines or hooks that grow on the base of each leaf and resemble cat's claws in shape. These hooks allow it to cling to and climb other nearby plants.

Cat's claw supports the immune system and is therefore increasingly popular, and is traditionally used for a variety of purposes by the indigenous Indians of the Amazon region. Today, it is available in capsule, tablet, tincture or as a dried herb for tea.

Bioherba brand tincture is made from cat's claw soaked in glycerin, which gives it a sweet taste. Glycerin is a colourless, odourless liquid, slightly thicker than water.
