Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a fatty acid that belongs to the omega-6 fatty acids. A conjugated linoleic acid molecule differs from a linoleic acid molecule in that the latter has a single bond, while the former has a double bond.

CLA or conjugated linoleic acid is absorbed into the body in the small intestine and stored in the body in adipose tissue. The best dietary sources of CLA are ruminant fats - either those found in meat or in dairy products such as cheese and butter.

CLA is a partially hydrogenated fatty acid that is naturally hydrogenated by bacteria in the rumen of ruminants.It is not harmful, in fact quite the opposite - CLA has become a popular dietary supplement.

Industrially processed dairy or meat products have artificially reduced fat content and therefore contain less of the beneficial CLA. In this case, CLA in capsule form is an effective nutritional supplement.
