Curcuma (Curcuma longa) is a ginger-like plant native to Asia. It is cultivated in China, India and Indonesia. Most commonly used as a spice, it is also an ornamental plant with beautiful flowers.
Dried and ground, it is used as a spice. It has a distinctive taste and a characteristic yellow colour which leaves a trace on the skin or clothing on contact. The vibrant colour of ground turmeric powder is attributed to a component called curcumin.
Curcuma is also one of the spices in the well-known curry blend (curry spice), and in India it has a prominent place in Ayurveda, where it is referred to as a sacred food.

Use
